This is so true: "don’t use Twitter or Facebook to push your book into the faces of readers – a guaranteed turn off – instead, be yourself, be enthusiastic and enter into conversations with readers. Conversations are two way, sales pitches are not."
An example of a writer I see using facebook very well is Kyo Maclear. She has a novel and a picture book out this season and her FB page is full of all sorts of things bound to be interesting to readers of those books but she refrains from pushing her books in your face.
Now going to look up Sarah Salway. Thanks.

Thanks for hosting me, Danuta, and your kind words! One thing I should have said is that social media is really good fun as well. I've just been listening to the radio and the interviewee saying how scared she is of it, so I thought I'd add this. Some good people to follow for advice and support are @nicolamorgan, @hprw, @bubblecow and @shedworking. Nicola Morgan, in particular, has very good advice for writers - involving a rule of three. One third self-promotion, one third supporting others, and one third conversation.
